South Tangerang, August 1, 2024 — The demand for engineers in Indonesia continues to grow. However, only around 14% of university graduates in the country come from engineering-related fields, producing approximately 100,000 engineers annually. This figure remains significantly lower than that of many other Asian countries, despite Indonesia being the fourth most populous nation in the world.
According to data from Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, the country has approximately 2,671 engineers per one million inhabitants. This number lags far behind neighboring countries such as Vietnam, which has around 9,000 engineers per one million inhabitants, and South Korea, with approximately 25,000 engineers per one million inhabitants. These figures indicate that the current number of engineers in Indonesia remains far below the ideal level needed to support national development.
To help address this challenge, PT Tripatra Engineers and Constructors (TRIPATRA), one of Indonesia’s leading engineering-based solution providers, collaborated with Indika Foundation to organize the "Engineering for Teenagers" program on July 20, 2024. The initiative provided approximately 70 junior high school students and equivalent-level students from across Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) with the opportunity to gain firsthand exposure to the engineering profession and renewable energy sector, while inspiring greater interest in pursuing careers in these fields.
Ananto Wardono, Green Energy Development at TRIPATRA, explained:
"The shortage of engineers poses a significant challenge to Indonesia’s development across various sectors, including infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, and many others. Addressing this issue requires sustained investment in education and training to cultivate a larger pool of competent professionals. By preparing our younger generation for careers in engineering, we not only strengthen the nation’s capacity to manage its natural resources effectively but also ensure sustainable progress that delivers long-term benefits to society."
The "Engineering for Teenagers" program featured a series of engaging and interactive activities designed to introduce young participants to the engineering profession and renewable energy technologies. These included educational talk shows and hands-on experiments.
During the talk show sessions, participants gained insights into various engineering disciplines, career opportunities in the engineering sector, and the critical role engineers play in developing innovative solutions to address future challenges. As the highlight of the program, participants also took part in a simple renewable energy experiment called "Solar Drip Irrigation." The activity was designed to provide a practical introduction to renewable energy applications while encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking among students.
Ananto further emphasized:
"Engineering competencies are essential for a nation’s progress and competitiveness. TRIPATRA remains committed to contributing to sustainable development. By improving educational quality and introducing engineering concepts at an early age, we hope to inspire and nurture future generations of talented engineers who can meet Indonesia’s growing demand for skilled professionals, while also supporting the acceleration of downstream industrialization and the energy transition. Since its launch in 2019, the 'Engineering for Teenagers' program has reached more than 300 junior high school students from over 200 schools, and we look forward to expanding its impact even further in the years ahead."
